Car insurance: paying monthly vs annually in the UK

Compare the full cost of annual and monthly car insurance payments, including the deposit, instalments and any interest or fees.

Monthly payments can spread the cost, but may include interest or fees. Compare the full payment schedule with the annual price, rather than comparing one instalment with a year's premium.

Use the whole payment schedule

Imagine the same cover is offered at £600 paid upfront, or a £60 initial payment followed by 11 instalments of £55. The instalment total is £665: £65 more over the year. These invented figures illustrate the calculation, not a current insurance offer or an APR.

Check how many payments there are and whether the first or last differs. Do not multiply a headline monthly figure by 12 unless that matches the actual schedule. Add a separate fee only if it is not already included.

Compare equivalent cover

Keep the cover, excess, optional extras and policy period the same when comparing payment options. Otherwise a difference in the total could reflect a different product as well as the payment method.

An annual payment needs more money at the start. Consider affordability alongside the total cost, and read any separate finance agreement before deciding.

  • Annual price for the same cover
  • Initial payment and number of remaining instalments
  • Total payable, including separately charged fees
  • Any credit agreement, interest and late-payment terms
  • What happens to outstanding payments if the policy is cancelled
