A soft credit search does not affect your credit score. A hard search leaves a record visible to other lenders and can affect your score. Check which search the service will use before proceeding.
Read the step, not just the button
An eligibility tool may use a soft search to estimate your chances. A formal credit application commonly involves a hard search. Do not assume every button labelled 'check' works identically: read the firm's explanation.
Several hard searches in a short period can affect how lenders assess an application. A favourable eligibility result is not the same as an unconditional lending decision.
A short check before you continue
Keep a private note of the firm, date, type of search described and the step you completed. It can help you distinguish research from applications if you return later. Do not send credit reports or financial account information to a social-media account asking to help.
- Does the page explicitly say soft search or hard search?
- Who carries out the search?
- Am I researching eligibility or submitting an application?
- What further checks or conditions remain?
- Where can I ask the firm if its explanation is unclear?
Umofi's current position
These guides do not perform a credit search or collect application details. They explain terminology so you can read a provider's process more clearly. A future Umofi introduction route must separately explain its actual scope and the named recipient.
